| Luján Announces More Than $4 Million in School Improvement Grants for New Mexico |

Thursday, March 15, 2012 Santa Fe, NM – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District announced today that New Mexico will receive more than $4 million through the Department of Education’s School Improvement Grants (SIG) program to improve the lowest-performing schools. “A quality education is essential to the future success of New Mexico’s children. It is vital that we invest in our schools with a focus on turning around those that struggle the most in order to provide an environment that encourages our children to learn and succeed,” Congressman Luján said. “These funds are critical to that effort and will help our state invest in a brighter future for the next generation.” New Mexico will receive $4,132,255 in grants that are provided to local educational agencies that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use the funds to substantially raise the achievement of students in their lowest-performing schools. These grants are part of $535 million provided through the fiscal year 2011 budget. New Mexico is one of 25 states and the District of Columbia that is receiving School Improvement Grants. # # # |
