Luján Statement In Honor Of Memorial Day

[SANTA FE, NM]– Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) released the following statement in honor of Memorial Day and the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. Luján will commemorate Memorial Day at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe today at 10 a.m.

“New Mexicans have a long and proud tradition of service in our Armed Forces, and of bravely answering the call of duty when our country needs them most. From the Navajo Code Talkers to the soldiers who faced the Bataan Death March, the people of New Mexico have always played a key role in our nation’s defense. Today we remember all the men and women throughout our history, who, in conflicts near and far, have protected our great nation with everything they had, many making the ultimate sacrifice. We remember also those missing in action and prisoners of war. While we may not know all the stories of heroism that have occurred over the years, we do know that we owe each individual our deepest gratitude and respect.

“As we honor and remember those we have lost, we also recognize the ongoing obligation we have to our veterans. To quote President Kennedy: ‘As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.’

“So as we offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to those we have lost, we also re-commit ourselves to fulfilling our nation’s promise to our veterans, and men and women in uniform.”
