Luján Statement on 150th Anniversary of the Navajo Nation Treaty of 1868

[SANTA FE, NM]– Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) released the following statement today to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Navajo Nation Treaty of 1868:

“This anniversary – the ‘Year of the Naaltsoos Saní’ – recognizes 150 years of Navajo history. Here in New Mexico, we know that history well. We know how the Navajo people were forced to undergo ‘The Long Walk,’ which drove them from their lands and to the point of near devastation. And we know how the Diné managed to not only survive, but demanded their sovereignty and returned to their lands.

“Today we commemorate the determination of the Navajo leaders who, 150 years ago, had the courage to demand justice for their people, and we honor the resilience that has enabled Navajo Nation to endure and thrive. That same resilience has made for stronger farmers, stronger entrepreneurs, and will lead to a stronger future.

“As we reflect on the last 150 years of growth, I also look forward to seeing the next 150 years of progress for the Diné. I know the future will include the ongoing revitalization of the Navajo language and cultural traditions, and the continued strengthening of Navajo government.”
