Flood damages about 2,000 books at Santa Fe library
Aug 2, 2018A flood, after monsoon rain, destroyed thousands of books at the La Farge Branch Library in Santa Fe.
"The night of the storm we had a roof leak. And it was like a waterfall against this back wall," Library Director Kathryn Spangle explained.
She says the water destroyed more than 2,000 children’s books and soaked the carpet and wooden shelves.
In total, she says the flood caused about $37,000 worth of damage.
Spangle says Congressman Ben Ray Lujan is trying to replace the books through the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program.
"We are just overwhelmed by his act of generosity and his willingness to do something for us," Spangle said.
The community is also helping the library return to normal.
On Sunday, two Santa Fe businesses will be holding fundraisers. The Casa Chimayo Restaurant will be donating 10 percent of the day's sales to the library and the Violet Crown Cinema will donate a portion of the money made off all ticket and keg sales.
“It really makes me feel great. I mean, knowing that people really value this place and value what we do for the community, it's heartwarming," Spangle said.
The library will remain closed until it can pass an air quality test and repair all the damage.
They hope to have it open by the time school begins on August 14.
