Luján Statement on FY2018 Omnibus Appropriations Package

[Washington DC] – Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) today released the following statement on the $1.3 trillion omnibus appropriations package for Fiscal Year 2018. Luján opposed the bill.

“Once again, Republican leaders in Congress have delivered a funding bill that ignores our nation’s true priorities and fundamentally fails in their responsibility to govern. The bill fails to provide a permanent solution for 800,000 Dreamers, despite repeated promises by the President and Speaker Paul Ryan; it does not safeguard the pensions of millions of Americans who worked hard all their lives and now deserve peace of mind; and, despite the voices of thousands of young Americans demanding action, it fails to meaningfully address gun violence prevention. The bill also does nothing to provide stability for our healthcare system, which is sorely needed after the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans’ deliberate sabotage of the Affordable Care Act.

After months of inaction and temporary spending bills, Republicans introduced this massive funding bill late last night, gave Members of Congress less than 24 hours to read over 2,000 pages, and allowed only two hours of debate on the floor of the House of Representatives. This isn’t how governing is supposed to work.

This is not a bill that serves New Mexico and it does not serve the American people.”
