Luján Statement on 54th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act
Nambé, N.M. – U.S. House Assistant Speaker Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the 54th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act:
“The Voting Rights Act was a landmark piece of civil rights legislation that sought to end racial discrimination at the ballot box and ensure every American could make their voice heard in our elections. The advancements this legislation achieved for African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, women, and minorities in this country were hard fought for by legions of dedicated and determined civil rights activists, and it’s in their memory we celebrate our progress toward a more perfect union.
“Today, we celebrate the Voting Rights Act and commit ourselves to restoring the vote. Six years after the Supreme Court gutted this critical legislation, House Democrats are fighting to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act to build on the progress we’ve made to eliminate barriers to the ballot box and ensure fair elections.”
