Luján Statement Recognizing LGBTQ Pride Month
Nambé, N.M. – U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement marking the beginning of LGBTQ Pride Month:
“We mark this Pride Month at a solemn moment as our nation reels from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and calls for justice for marginalized and vulnerable communities. While LGBTQ Americans have made hard-fought gains toward equality and self-determination through persistence, LGBTQ individuals – particularly transgender women of color – are still subjected to violence and discrimination simply because of who they are or whom they love.
“We must take inspiration from the LGBTQ leaders and activists who have fearlessly fought to make our country more inclusive and recommit ourselves to the mission of equality and justice. This is a fight that I will continue as an ally alongside LGBTQ Americans so that America fully lives up to its values.”
