Congressman Luján Denounces GOP Lawsuit to Rip Away Protections for People with Pre-Existing Conditions

Today, as oral arguments begin in a federal District Court in Texas in the Republicans’ Texas v. United States lawsuit to strike down the Affordable Care Act’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions, Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) issued the following statement:

“Last year, the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans failed at their heartless attempt to rip health insurance away from millions of Americans, to slap an age tax on seniors, and to bring back discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions.

“So now, the Administration is using this lawsuit as a backdoor attempt to sabotage America’s health care system, putting the care of 130 million Americans at risk.

“There are people behind these numbers. These are loved ones who are recovering from cancer. Children who can’t go to school because of their chronic asthma. People who are struggling with substance use disorder. In a country like ours, everyone – not just the healthy and wealthiest Americans – should be able to count on access to quality, affordable health care.

“Americans have made it clear that they oppose these Republican efforts to jeopardize the financial stability of families. They deserve a future where everyone in our country is afforded the same opportunity to see a doctor without worrying about bankruptcy. Where every mom knows she can take a sick child to urgent care without facing financial ruin. And, where no senior has to choose between paying rent or paying for their prescription drugs.

“That’s why Democrats are united in fighting this heartless lawsuit and partisan attacks. And, instead, are hard at work building a health care system that is for the people.”
