Luján Statement on Immigrant Heritage Month

[Washington, D.C.]– Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) released the following statement today on Immigrant Heritage Month, celebrated during the month of June.

This June, we celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month, a time to recognize our shared American story while appreciating the ongoing contributions of our immigrant brothers and sisters. Immigrants are integral to New Mexico and to the United States. They serve as doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, teachers, and in our armed forces. They are our friends, neighbors, and loved ones.

“Recently, our values as a nation of immigrants have come under attack. We cannot forget that America was founded by immigrants seeking a better life for themselves and future generations.

“As President Kennedy once said, ‘Immigration policy should be generous; it should be fair; it should be flexible.’ We must reject policies that needlessly divide us. It is a betrayal of our founding principles to build walls and hide from the world.

“I am committed to fighting for those who come to America in pursuit of opportunity and freedom. The American dream belongs to us all.”
