Luján Statement Regarding the Senate Health Care Vote

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) released the following statement after the Republican health care bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act failed to pass the Senate:

“Yesterday the U.S. Senate spoke loud and clear: Trumpcare would have denied health coverage for millions of hard-working families, caused higher premiums and deductibles, and driven up other health care costs for tens of millions more.

“Last night’s vote showed what can happen when Congress listens to the concerns of their constituents. The true credit goes to those millions of Americans, including thousands of New Mexicans, who called or wrote our offices pleading with us to stop this disastrous Republican healthcare bill in its tracks. It is a testament to the power of American families to organize, mobilize and make their voices heard.”

“We must turn the page and move beyond cynical, partisan attempts to repeal and replace the current health care law – we must work together to keep what works and fix what needs fixing. That includes working to lower health costs, improve quality, and expand coverage, while working to stabilize the health insurance marketplaces by ensuring we have strong reinsurance and expanded risk corridors, – especially in rural places like New Mexico.  We should also work together to reduce the soaring cost of prescription drugs – the largest factor in increasing health costs in America.”

“We are a country founded on cooperation and compromise and we should return to those guiding principles to resolve the healthcare challenges we now face.”
