Lujan on the Death of Former Navajo Nation President Leonard Haskie
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District honored the life of Leonard Haskie, former Navajo Nation Interim President and member of the Council, who passed away on Sunday.
“I would like to express my condolences to the family of Leonard Haskie and to the Navajo Nation for the loss of one its respected leaders. Leonard Haskie was a traditional man, who held true to those values in every position he was called to serve,” Congressman Luján said. “Mr. Haskie served his people during a challenging time as the Navajo Nation was seeking to heal from divisions and political turmoil. He helped oversee a successful transition for a government that moved from a Chairman to a President by bringing people together. He will be remembered as a Navajo leader who helped support the foundation of today’s Navajo government.”
Leonard Haskie was elected to serve as the Interim President of the Navajo Nation Council in 1989, a position he held for two years. He served on the Gallup McKinley County School board as an Assistant Superintendent of Support Services until his retirement earlier this year. In 2014, Haskie was asked by six Navajo chapters to fill the vacancy on the Navajo Nation Council to represent Belcabito, Cove, Cudeii, Red Valley, Sheep Spring and Toadlena.
