Gallup, NM – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District awarded a number of medals to Navy veteran Gus Keene this morning at a ceremony in Gallup. He was joined by Commander Dave Cuellar, U.S. Navy (Ret.), founder of Veterans Helping Veterans.
A native of Acoma Pueblo, Gus Keene was drafted into the Navy in 1965 from Tuba City, Arizona. After completing boot camp in Long Beach, California, Mr. Keene was stationed aboard the USS Bennington and completed several combat tours with the 7th Fleet during the Vietnam War. During one of his tours, Mr. Keene and the USS Bennington responded to aid the USS Pueblo when it was captured by North Korean ships.
When Mr. Keene completed his service, he was not informed of his eligibility for a number of medals. When he realized that his time and efforts in the Navy had earned him these medals, he contacted Congressman Luján’s office for help.
“Mr. Keene bravely served his country and has added to New Mexico’s proud legacy of military service,” said Congressman Lujan. “I am honored that we had the opportunity to assist Mr. Keene and ensure that he received the medals and the thanks he earned.”
“I want to thank the Congressman for all his hard work,” said Mr. Keene. “It’s great to finally get the honor we as veterans all deserve.”
Congressman Luján and his staff worked on behalf of Mr. Keene to obtain the following medals that he earned for his brave military service prior to his Honorable Discharge in 1969:
• National Defense Medal
• Vietnam Service Medal with a Silver Star
• Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon with a Bronze Star
• Good Conduct Medal
