Lujan statement honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Today we honor a man who lived his life striving to create a better, more just world. His dream for his children and all children, to grow up in a world that valued equality, justice and liberty—that dream transformed our nation. Today we honor not only him, but his message—a message that must live on through us and our good works.
“Dr. Martin Luther King preached of love, respect, and hope; of a world that rejects discrimination and suspicion, hate and racism, poverty and hunger. And today his message lives on as our communities celebrate together, stick together, and always strive to look out for one another. It’s not always easy, but countless souls among us look out for each other every day.
“Dr. King said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” It’s when helping our neighbor gets hard that we must lean on Dr. King’s spirit the most and look inconvenience and apathy in the eye. No child should go to bed hungry, no individual should denied his or her basic human rights, every person should have the opportunity to live up to his or her given potential.
"In taking the time to reflect on his vision, we come together to ensure that we live up to his memory. Dr. King continues on in each of us who continue his workand continue to strive for what is right. Each day let’s simply ask ourselves and each other what can we do in our own lives to move us one step closer to Dr. King’s dream. We all have a role to play. We all have something to offer."
"I am confident that through our commitment and hard work we will one day realize the vision of King for our nation and world. That one day we will be able to reach the Promised Land that is Dr. King’s enduring dream."
