Lujan Statement on Department of Justice Report on Albuquerque Police Department

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement today after the release of a Department of Justice report on the Albuquerque Police Department.

“The Department of Justice report details serious problems within the Albuquerque Police Department.  Over the past few years, the use of deadly and excessive force, as well as non-lethal force, has shaken the community, and it is clear that there must be systemic changes.  The report also highlights the importance of addressing mental illness in our communities and the need to have a thorough discussion about how we better care for those suffering from mental illness.  As this process moves forward, it will be essential to have significant community involvement and input in order to restore trust in APD.  I appreciate the work by the Department of Justice and their commitment to work with the Police Department and the community to see that critical reforms are implemented swiftly and effectively.”
