Lujan Statement on President Obama's Budget Proposal

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement today on President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2016 budget proposal.

“The President’s budget puts the focus where it should be – on middle-class economics.  President Obama has offered a number of ideas to address the squeeze that is gripping middle-class families.  By concentrating on growing paychecks and investing in the critical areas that grow our economy, the President’s budget stands in stark contrast to House Republicans’ trickle-down policies that only focus on those at the top.

“The President’s focus on expanding early education and investing in STEM education is critical to helping New Mexico’s children get ahead.  I am encouraged by the overall funding levels for New Mexico’s national labs, but I will continue to advocate for more funding for environmental cleanup in the appropriations process.  The arbitrary budget cuts of the sequester have harmed New Mexico, and by reversing this policy that led to Head Start centers shutting down, workers being furloughed, and cuts to the national labs, the President’s budget takes important steps to support investments that are essential to New Mexico’s future.”
