Luján Statement on Trump Administration Plans to Deploy Federal Forces to Albuquerque

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), the U.S. House Assistant Speaker, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that he will deploy federal forces to Albuquerque:

“One of my top priorities in Congress has been to provide our communities with the resources and tools they need to reduce crime. I’ve found committed partners in law enforcement, local and state officials, and my fellow members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation. I stand ready to work with anyone who is serious about addressing Albuquerque’s crime problem.

“If President Trump is truly interested in reducing crime, he should join New Mexicans’ efforts by supporting strong investments in community policing, new economic and educational opportunities for New Mexico’s youth, and universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous individuals. But if his intent is to recreate the scenes out of Portland – with anonymous federal agents rounding up residents in unmarked vehicles – I will do everything I can as a Member of Congress to hold him accountable. New Mexicans deserve an honest commitment from the federal government to address crime in Albuquerque and across our state.”
