Luján Statement on War Powers Vote

Washington, D.C. – U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to curb President Trump's attempts to force our country into war with Iran:

"President Trump put American servicemembers and our county in harm's way when he brought the U.S. to the brink of war with Iran. His reckless behavior was unjustified.

“Today, I was proud to vote for legislation that explicitly bans President Trump from engaging in military action unless specifically authorized by Congress. The U.S. House also approved legislation to repeal the 2002 authorization for the use of military force, which has been wrongly used by presidents to continue military action in the region. We can and must protect our country's national security without engaging in the irresponsible behavior that defines the Trump administration."
