Luján Announces 2019 Congressional Art Competition
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), the U.S. House Assistant Speaker, announced details for the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in young people.
The winning entry from New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District will be displayed as part of an exhibit in the United States Capitol for one year. In honor of Earth Day, the theme of this year’s Art Competition is Mother Earth.
“I look forward to seeing the creative work of New Mexico’s young artists,” said Luján. “Art plays a vital role in our schools, culture, and heritage in New Mexico. I am excited to see a little piece of home represented in the hallways of the Capitol.”
The competition is open to all high school students within the 3rd Congressional District of New Mexico. All entries must be submitted to Congressman Luján’s Santa Fe district office by Friday, April 26 at 5 p.m.
A panel of local artists will judge the artwork, and Congressman Luján will announce the winners on Friday, May 26. The office address is 1611 Calle Lorca Street, Suite A, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87505.
Winners will be flown to Washington D.C. for the Annual Congressional Art Competition Awards Ceremony.
Artwork entered in the contest may be up to 26 inches (high) by 26 inches (wide) by up to 4 inches in depth, and cannot weigh more than 15 pounds, including the frame. The artwork may be:
- Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
- Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
- Collage - must be two dimensional
- Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
- Mixed Media – use of more than two mediums such as pencil ink, watercolor, etc.
- Computer Generated Art
All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution and must not violate U.S. Copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image will not be accepted.
Every participant must print out and complete the student information release form which can be downloaded here. Artwork cannot be accepted without an attached fully-completed release form.
