Luján Statement on President Trump’s State of the Union Address

Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (NM-03) released the following statement tonight in reaction to President Trump’s State of the Union address:

“What the American people were expecting to hear tonight was a message of unity, unfortunately the President failed to deliver. It’s hard to listen to President Trump tout economic progress after he shut the government down for over a month, causing financial harm to families and billions of dollars in permanent damage to our economy. If the President truly wants to prioritize American workers he should work with Democrats to make real investments in our nation’s infrastructure instead of spending his political capital on tax breaks for billionaires. And, while I agree that we need to lower prescription drug prices and health care costs in this country, it’s hard to take the President seriously on this issue after he has repeatedly tried to rip health protections away from millions of Americans.

“Tonight was another missed opportunity to bring us together, and I’m disappointed the President chose to fill his speech with failed promises and demeaning rhetoric about immigrant communities. Once again, the President insisted on demanding a ridiculous wall instead of promising to work with Members of Congress on modern, effective, border security solutions that will make the American people more safe. It's time for the President to join Democrats in advancing an agenda that puts the American people first by lowering health care costs, raising workers’ wages, acting on climate change, and cleaning up corruption in Washington.”
