Luján Statement on House Rejection of GOP Immigration Bill

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) released the following statement in reaction to the House rejection of Speaker Ryan’s anti-immigrant legislation, H.R. 6136, the “Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2018:”

“Just last week I was in Brownsville, Texas, meeting infants Roger and Lea, who had been torn from their families by President Trump’s inhumane and immoral family separation policy. The President caused this problem and the President has not fixed it. If the President truly believed that separating families is wrong, as he has repeatedly said, he could have made a single phone call to truly end this practice for good.

“Speaker Ryan and Republican leadership have done no better. They have failed again and again to protect children. Congress could have taken action to meaningfully protect children and keep families together. Congress didn’t. Speaker Ryan blocked a vote on bipartisan legislation to protect Dreamers. Roger and Lea deserve better.”

On Monday, June 18, Luján visited two immigrant detention facilities in Brownsville, TX, including a “tender age” facility where he met two infants who had been separated from their families because of President Trump’s policies. Luján is an original co-sponsor of House Democrats’ legislation to end family separation at the border, the Keep Families Together Act, and co-signed a letter demanding a hearing on the wellbeing of children forcibly separated from their parents and families and placed into the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).
